Lagos Seeks Investors For Tourism Facilities

Lagos State Government through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture is ready for ideas and plans by investors for the replication of wonderful leisure and tourism facilities in all parts of the State.

This statement was made by the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture Folorunsho Folarin-Coker during the official commissioning of the redeveloped Apapa Amusement Park on Saturday 30th January, 2016.

In his address the commissioner noted that the event is another significant step by the administration of His Excellency, Akinwunmi Ambode to use Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment and Sports [THESE] as a tool to stimulate the economy of the State.

Folarin-Coker noted that the park used to be number one leisure spot for healthy family entertainment, recreation and relaxation in entire Lagos, but suffered depreciation and the value derived from visiting the park by every family in Lagos diminished. However, the State Government in conjunction with other stakeholders and a new concessionaire took interest in the resuscitation of the park.

The commissioner further stated that the park offers Lagosians an opportunity for the regeneration of family values and bonding. In his words “leisure spot with facilities as contained here goes a long way in stimulating the mind through recreation and entertainment.”

Folarin-coker seized the opportunity to inform Lagosians that the administration of His Excellency, Akinwunmi Ambode will continue to invest in the creation of enabling environment and platforms for partnership with interested private sector organizations; he said the intervention will affect all facets of tourism, entertainment, hospitality and generate multiplier value for the State economy.

Also speaking at the event, Hon. Adebimpe Akinsola, the Special adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Arts and Culture ”Amusement parks provide picture-perfect moments and memories to last a time and ideal place for family fun, that means parents have extra time to spend with their children, and what better way to engage in classic fun with family and friends than to visit Apapa Amusement park”.

She also commended the vision of the State Government, the five owner Local Governments and Messr Cube Nig. Ltd in making sure re-investment into the park is secured and for recreating a park of the children’s dream.

Delta Sets To Host Hospitality, Tourism And Eco-Sustainability Forum

All is now set for the maiden edition of the Hospitality, Tourism and Eco-Sustainability Forum [IHTEF] 2016, in Asaba, Delta State. A statement issued by Chief Executive Officer of Sustainable Eco6tems, and Co-Organizer Engr. Chibuikem Diala indicates that the two day event is scheduled to hold at the prestigiousNelrose Hotel, Asaba, between March 23rd and 24th 2016.

According to the statement, the event promises to be the hospitality and tourism event of the year, with experts in the hospitality and tourism industry, as well as climate change experts, businesses, international development organizations, governments, amongst others, in attendance.

Speakers expected at the event include Hon. Ned Nwoko, a former House of Representative Member and a tourism enthusiast of International repute, Dr Michael Pinder of Sun Heavens Resort, Sir Monday Onyeme who is the Chairman, Delta State Board of Internal Revenue, etc. Other speakers will be confirmed soon.

The core objective of the IHTEF 2016 is to build advocacy for excellence in the hospitality and tourism industry, as well as, build up superior local and international investments in the emerging green economy, while driving the advocacy to support eco-sustainability in the South and East of Nigeria.

The 2016 International Hospitality, Tourism & Eco-Sustainability Conference will equally be focusing on the opportunities for prosperity and eco-sustainability through Hospitality and Tourism in the regions of Delta, Edo, Imo, Anambara, Enugu, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa States

Other Objectives of the Forum include interactive sessions to discuss and analyze the growing importance of Hospitality and Tourism in Sub-National/Sub-regional economies, with the aim of positioning the hospitality and tourism sector as a major employment generation industry in Nigeria.

It is also expected that a credible platform to champion issues of environment protection, climate change and green economy, will be established at the end of the Forum deliberations.

The Forum will equally discuss ways of driving up hotel sales as well as increasing revenue for owners; harness means of building up foreign investment portfolio to boost the tourism sector; Link Hospitality and Tourism Development to Urban Renewal and Sustainability of diverse Ecosystems; Seek ways of supporting rural tourism marketing and promotion, including regional and International tourism exchange.

In addition, the Organizers of IHTEF 2016 have packaged an Exhibition which will not only create wider opportunities for all stakeholders and participants to leverage on, but will also provide opportunity for Hotels, Airlines, Spa and Wellness, Fashion Houses, Schools, Culinary and Hospitality Institutions, FMCGs, Furniture/Interior Companies among others.

African Sun Of Zimbabwe And The Tragedy Of Continental Adventure

African Sun Limited [changed from Zimbabwe Sun Limited in 2008 in order to include the Pan African idea], is a Zimbabwe hospitality management company established in 1968.

It operates in the hospitality and leisure industry through a number of hotels, resorts, casinos and timeshare and throughout Zimbabwe, and has expanded its operations into Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia.

With a Pan African vision, African Sun moved beyond Southern Africa to West Africa to Nigeria and Ghana, where initial management agreement were reached with some private and public properties.
At a time, African Sun was running the famous Holiday Inn Accra Airport in Ghana, Obudu Mountain Resort and Amber Tinapa, now Lakeside Resort both properties owned by the Cross River State Government.

African Sun also managed Nike Lake Resort in Enugu also owned by the Enugu State Government. Apart from the aforementioned, the Zimbabwe hotel management company was also involved in some soft opening of Best Western Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, Best Western Hotel, Benin, Edo State, Nigeria and finallyAfrican Sun Amber Residence in Ikeja as well as African Sun Airport Hotel both in Lagos that they have also lost.

African Sun last adventure in West Africa also ended disastrously when it’s Amber Hotel, near Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana closed down and now Ibis Hotel.

The question is, why is it that a celebrated hospitality management company that is well respected in Zimababwe and parts of Southern Africa, failed woefully in its adventurous in West Africa?

African Travel Times Magazine Publisher/Editor, Lucky Onoriode George who was Public Relations Consultant to African Sun Limited in West Africa noted that the Zimbabwe hospitality company misjudged the business environment of the region and as well as took some of the owners of the properties, especially in Nigeria for their words.

Shockingly, sometimes, they run some properties for as long as two years without their management fee paid, the case in mind were Cross River State’s Obudu and Amber Tinapa before they finally left.

Apart from the ownership uncooperative altitude, African Sun Limited lack the experience of a direct management contracts, rather than, the company is well known for running its sister company hotels and lease properties which without doubt they are successful at.

While this editorial is not to mock African Sun Limited, but to remind the current leadership of the company that their adventure in West Africa was nothing, but a total disgrace not just to Zimbabwe business image, but black Africans in general.

There Are Still Challenges To Overcome In Travel And Tourism In Ghana – Porter

Bruce Porter, General Manager, Holiday Inn Accra Airport in Ghana spoke to Lucky Onoriode George African Travel Times Publisher/Editor on the progress made so far in the hospitality industry in Ghana. Excerpts:

The last time we spoke, we lamented the attack on a hotel in Bamako, Mali. Just recently again, hotels were attacked in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, how much of panic is this creating here in Ghana?

I don’t think the two incidents you referred to are threat to the travel and tourism industry as such, but for the fact that journalists or the media as a whole is broadcasting and writing about them; made a big deal of them. However, what we are doing to prevent similar attack is a security matter and cannot be discussed which I guess you fully understand.

Above all, security issues are left to the authority, which is the government. There is nothing any individual hotel owner can do, because we do not have the necessary intelligent and the capacity to deal with such.

As usual, we have strengthened our relationship with the relevant security agencies so that when we have any concern and suspicion, we can contact them.

How is business turning out, knowing fully that January is usually a dull period for the sector?

It’s been bouncing back since October-November. December was flat and I am happy that January has witnessed some bouncing back and February and March are showing some positive signs.

With the positive trends we are seeing, we hope it would continue till June and thereon too. Do not also forget that we are in election year; because it was moved forward to November and we are hoping that things will pan out beautifully.

Ebola is gone and we thank God that Zika did not begin from here again, how much of a relief is this to the industry?

It was first discovered in Uganda from what I have read in the media, but it also seems that the media is once again over-hyping the spread and health implication as such.

The last time we spoke, we talked about impeding competition from new hotels that were expected to open, what is it like now?

So far, only Kempinski Hotel opened last year here in Accra as a major addition and this year, we are also expecting Marriott to open after eight years. Besides that, we are not expecting any major opening soon.

Frankly speaking, Kempinski Hotel will make a difference because they will bring bigger business to town for conferences and seminars. At that, no hotel in Accra can accommodate a thousand people and that is where too hotels like ours will profit from their coming on board.

Though, more middle level hotels are opening all the time, and charge around $120.00, which in my view are needed, but the big 4 stars and 5stars will find their feet because of the quality services that they would be providing.

Again, there would be competition, but am also quite convinced it would be a healthy one because it would not get to panic level of saying God, how do we survive?

You are receiving African Travel Times Magazine 2015 Award for ‘Consistent Quality Service’, how have you been able to sustain consistency in your service?

It’s all about motivating the employees because they are the ones giving the service. My position as general manager is to orchestrate everyone to exercise the freedom to creative and express themselves in whatever they have to do.

One other thing that has helped us as a team is the family feel that we have and this include the owner Patrick Fares.

Maintaining consistence also involves training and retraining, how has this been involving?

We have a formal training process and it’s very much guided by IHG laid out standards as well as our monthly catch up sessions too.

What is the level of turn over now?

Still, we do not have high turn-over of staff, except for those who are going as a result of natural retirement, marriage or something related.

What else are you adding to up your game?

We are looking at customer service which is key in the hospitality business. Again, we are also going to be doing soft refurbishment because the hotel is almost 8 years now.

Changing of wardrobes, tables as well as pay per view television entertainment system. For food and beverage side, we are revitalising the menu because the competition in the industry now is not just on rooms alone, but restaurant too.

Within 10 to 15 minutes-walk, you have some decent eateries that guests that are not satisfied with our menu can stroll to and have decent meals, which is why we are also upgrading our menu and being creative with it too.

Also thinking ahead, we have add burger menu to our system so that you do not have to walk out of the premises to have a burger bite.

What has been the response of your guests so far?

Its normal for guests to have or develop a perception that the hotel has not changed much since they have been coming because there are others coming, knowing fully this property will be 8 years soon.

So, the regular customers know what they are going to see when they come and are happy for the transition that has been taking place gradually.

How far are you doing with the regional market?

The business from the regional market has dropped because of the downturn on the price of crude oil in the international market. However, there are other opportunities coming up with government of Ghana doing a lot renewable jobs. Google is also in town laying cables and the IT section also growing.

To catch new businesses, we need new companies to come before we can achieve that.

We are ever more prepared to welcome you back and make them feel more at home away from home.

Tourism Is Facing A Difficult Moment In History – Nwauzi

Eugene O. Nwauzi is the Chairman, Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria [FTAN] Rivers State Chapter, and also the State Chairman of Nigeria Hotel Association [NHA]. In this interview with Lucky Onoriode George, African Travel Times /Publisher/Editor in Port Harcourt, he bares his mind on the several issues militating a productive and prosperous travel and tourism industry in Nigeria. Excerpts:

Scrapping of the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation is not a big deal, but that it was done shortly after a tourism practitioner concluded his tourism as minister, Edem Duke, where did we get it wrong?

I was not surprised though because before the creation of the current Ministry of Tourism and Culture in Rivers State, there was Ministry of Information and Culture of which tourism only existed as a department and yet things were still taken care of.

Sincerely, there is no big deal, hence the reason was to maximize our resource and with tourism now under information and culture, I am of the opinion that there would be a better working relationship, rather than the initial rivalry that was therein in the old ministry.

Concerning the behaviour and performance of the former minister, I don’t want to dissipate my energy talking about his tenure anymore. However, my major regret was his inability to get tourism a representation at the last confab which every sector of the Nigerian economy was represented, except tourism.

So regretful because till date, the travel and tourism sector still remain the highest employer of labour nationwide; ahead of government and oil and gas put together.

With economic crisis starring us in the face, I have no doubt that tourism is once again ‘low hanging fruit we can easily harvest’ to create jobs at the moment. If we are dreaming to industrialise or even going into mechanised farming, the aforementioned will still take a while because those equipment and industries would be built from the scratch.

In fact, there are some states in the Niger Delta here that their main industry is hospitality business. No manufacturing business or anything close to that, which is one of the reason we are calling on the federal government to give us the large chunk of the N200 billion intervention funds, that it said is set aside for the travel and tourism industry and see what will happen within a short period of time, because we are all capable of paying back within a short time.

No hotelier, restaurant owner or fast food operator that would not want to pay back provided the interest rate is pegged at single digit, as has been done for the other sectors in the past.

Imagine the huge amount that was given to Nollywood that is part of entertainment and an insignificant part of the tourism sector. The question is, what was done with the several millions of dollars given to the Nollywood guys? Was it for campaign or what? If it was for campaign, there are more hoteliers and tourism operators nationwide.

Imagine the numbers of operators campaigning for a governor or president, he or she would have been home drive.

One of the reasons why I think Jonathan lost the last election was the beef against him by operators. Imagine the travel and tourism industry campaigning and voting for him?

Imagine operators getting loans at 22 per cent? Though one of the banks promised 18 per cent which has not materialised though; just as we have the issue of C of O because for several years now here in Rivers State, the government has not issued C of O and it’s one of the major requirements of the banks.

What should the current Minister, Lai Mohammed start with?

First and foremost, the new minister must fight for tourism intervention fund for the sector, if he’s to make impact and leave a legacy at the end of his tenure. Without mincing words, we need 80 per cent of the N200 billion set aside for intervention in the 2016 budget.

Why should tourism alone get that much?

The reason is simple because most sectors of the economy have been given under the former regime. Textile, manufacturing, agriculture have all received. Again, such should go through the Bank of Industry so that operators can access the funds.

If you go round most of hotels in Rivers State and across the country, they cannot afford to change their linings or bed spreads regularly due to poor business environment.

Most recently, the era of kidnapping is back in our lexicon and even public servants are no longer safe. They are randomly kidnapped on daily basis and they are going into hiding.

Does that mean we are back in the past again?

The situation is worse than when we had the issue of militancy. Ask anyone in Rivers State. I am calling on the current governor to also call on the same God that the former governor [ChibuikeAmeachi] called on once again for His Majesty’s intervention, because the issue of militancy was not solved by military process alone.

Go round our hotels now and you will be shocked that we hardly have up to 30 per cent occupancy now. Times are really hard.

For almost a year and half now, business nose-dived due to pre-election, elections and the many negative utterances that followed.

For your information, most of the oil companies have moved their workers to Lagos and now shuttle between their rigs and Lagos due to insecurity.

It’s a tragedy. Now, hospitality business is booming in Lagos, whereas here in Port Harcourt, we are crying.

Worst still, information we are getting is that, some countries insurance companies in the last few years approach Nigerian High Commissions and Embassies, especially, the United Kingdom not to issue a visa to any British coming to Port Harcourt, except to Abuja and Lagos, saying they cannot bear the risk.

Is the state government aware and what is Wike’s regime doing about the volatile insecurity?

Well, the state is aware and they have been on radio and television, telling people that the government is on top of it. Besides, we also read in the media that the security agencies have been very active in the last few weeks combing hide outs and arresting some suspected criminals to douse the situation.

It’s only God that can help our situation, and we are calling on Governor Wike to please do same because most hotels have not been able to pay their workers and suppliers are also being owned too.
The aforementioned was the main subject of discussion at our meeting recently, because every one of us, big, medium and small is feeling the pain. Now that the Supreme Court had cleared the only outstanding issues, we are expecting that things will be better from this point.

However, we are having issues with the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency [NESREA] coming for hotel inspection. This is the first time they are coming forward and we have written to both the state and federal ministry of health respectively that were hitherto doing this and still doing so.

We are also going to write to Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria [FTAN] and the Nigeria Hotel Association [NHA] national, for them to find out what is the true position and sudden involvement of NESREA in inspecting hospitality establishments.

Already, we are over taxed and with the pushing from NESREA, we are also mindful that it might come with a form of tax again. With that in mind, operators are worried that they have not received any support from the federal, states and even local governments, hence the resentment of not wanting to accommodate any tax again.

Impression of tourism nationally now?

Presently, nothing is really happening at the national level, which is why we are planning Niger Delta Tourism Summit, through which we can attract investors because we are aware of the appetite and desire of the Middle East people to invest in the sector.

So, we want to bring people together to showcase our untapped tourism potentials in this part of Nigeria that has received little or no tourism attention except for oil and gas exploration business over the years.

To make it a success, we are mobilising the state governments and the Niger Delta Development Commission [NDDC] and other relevant agencies among others.

What should be the role of the private sector at this time?

I am calling on FTAN at the national level to mobilise all tourism related bodies to be part of it. Fashion Designers, Film Makers and Nollywood sector because they have all joined FTAN here in Rivers State.

We are also bringing the airport car hire service operators on board, transport companies; we will educate them, register hotels because Rivers State government did not register any hotel. Time past, business owners only did Corporate Affairs Commission [CAC] registration which is why it’s difficult today to know the exact number of hotels in the state.

However, we are working with the state government to formally begin the progress which will not only help provided the needed data, it would also help security wise and generate some cash for the government.

How many hotels are in operations in Rivers State?

There are close to 600 hotels of different categories in operation in the state, but those that are FTAN members are well above 200.
