In a move that has surprised many within the tourism sector, Chief Sam Alabi has resigned as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria [FTAN], the umbrella body for the private tourism sector in Nigeria.
Alabi, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s tourism industry, cited the need for fresh ideas and a smooth transition as the driving force behind his decision.
Having served as the President of FTAN for four years and an additional eight years as the Chairman of the Federation Board of Trustees [BoT], Alabi expressed his understanding of the importance of tenure in leadership roles. In his resignation letter, he emphasized the significance of allowing new leadership to take charge and inject innovative approaches into the federation’s operations.
“As a lawyer, I understand the word tenure,” Alabi stated in his letter. “It is essential to create space for someone with new ideas to come and serve.”
Throughout his tenure, Alabi has been instrumental in guiding FTAN through various challenges and opportunities within Nigeria’s tourism landscape. His leadership has been marked by a commitment to promoting the growth and development of the tourism sector while fostering cooperation among industry stakeholders.
In his resignation statement, Alabi underscored the importance of maintaining stability within FTAN, emphasizing that a smooth transition of leadership ensures the federation remains focused on its objectives without being marred by internal conflicts or discord.
“It is better for the federation to be in good stead, free of crisis and rancour,” Alabi remarked.
Alabi’s decision to step down comes at a critical juncture for FTAN, as the federation continues to navigate the evolving dynamics of the tourism industry amidst global challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
His departure signals a new chapter for FTAN, presenting an opportunity for fresh perspectives and renewed vigour in advancing the body’s mission of promoting Nigeria as a vibrant tourism destination.
As FTAN begins the process of selecting a new Chairman of the Board of Trustees, stakeholders within the tourism sector are optimistic about the potential for continued growth and innovation under new leadership.
In bidding farewell to Chief Sam Alabi, FTAN acknowledges his invaluable contributions to the federation and expresses gratitude for his dedication and service to the advancement of Nigeria’s tourism industry.
The resignation of Chief Sam Alabi serves as a reminder of the importance of leadership transitions in fostering organizational renewal and ensuring the continued relevance and effectiveness of stakeholders, of which FTAN is a major player.
Like some of his predecessors, Chief Sam Alabi ran the secretariat for years with his personal funds that sustained and has kept the federation standing.
Reacting to Chief Alabi’s sudden resignation, Nkereuwem Onung, President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria [FTAN], said that though the BoT Chairman gave him a heads up, he was not expecting an immediate departure.
He praised him for his time as FTAN President and BoT Chairman respectively, noting that his personal and institutional support rendered to the federation over the years is worthy of emulation.
