The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture is deepening international collaborations as it explores a proposed sister-city relationship and tourism partnership with East Point, Georgia, USA.
The initiative was discussed during a courtesy visit to the office of the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, by the President of the East Point Convention and Visitors Bureau, Mrs. Chantel Ross Francois, on Monday.
Benson-Awoyinka emphasised Lagos’ rising global profile as Africa’s entertainment and tourism capital, highlighting the state’s capacity to host world-class events.
“Lagos is overwhelmed, in a positive way, with hosting numerous international events and cultural exchanges. From the forthcoming E1 Series Electric Powerboat Race on the Lagos Lagoon, to AFRIMA, Design Week, Fashion Week, Art X Lagos, and the Eyo Festival, Lagos continues to affirm its place as Africa’s tourism and entertainment capital,” she said.
She disclosed ongoing discussions with global players to strengthen Lagos’ creative economy. Extending an invitation to East Point’s delegation, she urged them to experience the historic Eyo Festival later in the year as part of cultural diplomacy and talent exchange efforts.
In her response, Francois commended Lagos for its hospitality and cultural vibrancy, proposing a formal Sister City Programme between Lagos and East Point.
She further stressed Atlanta’s unique position as home to over 20,000 Nigerians, affirming the need to build stronger cultural and economic bridges with Lagos.
The strategic meeting also had in attendance key stakeholders, including the Founder/Convener, Strategic Solutions Global Diaspora Returns, Nancy Taiye Aragbaye; Founder/CEO, Waterlight Save Initiative, Dr. Prince Ero Ibhafidon; and Head of Tourism Business, Sterling Bank, Abiola Adelana.
