Lagos To Support Indigenous Culture Education For Children
Lagos State Government will continue to prioritize the inculcation of indigenous cultural education especially among school age children. The State believed that the preservation of the various aspects of the indigenous culture, moral ethos and languages of the people of the State is an utmost importance for sustainability of long term development and cultural values.
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Arts and Culture, Hon Adebimpe Akinsola, while interacting with school children participating in the ongoing summer cultural fiesta on Friday at the premises of the State Council for Arts and Culture, Ikeja.
The Special Adviser, also stated that “Governor Akinwunmi Ambode is an avowed lover of indigenous culture and its values and this can be affirmed through his unflinching supports for any programme or activity with indigenous culture content such as the children summer cultural fiesta”.
According to Hon. Akinsola, “children participating in the yearly programme, usually organized during the long holiday, are been exposed and train in cultural etiquette, the use of indigenous language to convey messages through moonlight stories, proverbs and idioms. They also undergo basic training in script writing, composition of traditional songs, dancing and drama presentation”.
The Special Adviser, who put the students through series of idioms and short stories, enjoined the participants to make good use of the opportunity and the derived benefits to justify the State Government investment in the programme.
The 2 weeks culture orientation programme which is running for the third year, according to the Director, Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, Olaitan Otulana, also involved vocational training in beads making, arts and craft production and decoration. The participating children will also learn basic visual art and production of Adire tie & die.
She advised parents to seize the opportunity to expose the children to this valuable cultural based programme that is still open for participants within the age of 8 to 15 years and will round up by 18th of August.
