Nigeria: Tourism Federation To Showcase Akwa Ibom At Council Meeting In Uyo
Nkereuwem Onung, President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria [FTAN], has announced that the federation will leverage its upcoming council meeting in Uyo to showcase Akwa Ibom State’s tourism assets and highlight the state government’s ongoing efforts to develop the sector.
Speaking at a recent press briefing, Onung revealed that the four-day event, scheduled for May 21-24, will feature the FTAN Governing Council Meeting, a gala night, and a guided tour for guests to experience the state’s cultural heritage and tourism offerings firsthand.
According to Onung, the decision to host the council meeting in Akwa Ibom is based on the state’s rising profile as a tourism destination in Africa. “Akwa Ibom State is a rising star in Nigeria and Africa’s tourism landscape, boasting a rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty,” he said.
As a veteran tourism player and founder of Remlords Tours, Onung also serves as an adviser to the Akwa Ibom State Governor. He outlined some key tourism initiatives spearheaded by the current administration under Governor Umo Eno, including:
- ARISE PARK: A state-of-the-art recreational centre designed to promote cultural heritage and showcase the state’s diverse cultural assets.
- Ibom Christmas Unplugged: An annual 32-day festival featuring cultural displays from all 31 local government areas.
- Tourism Committee: A committee established to assess, identify, and harness the state’s tourism potential, positioning Akwa Ibom as a desirable destination.
- Public-Private Partnerships: The government is actively seeking private sector collaboration to develop tourism infrastructure and revive key tourist attractions.
“These initiatives aim to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and promote tourism as a catalyst for development in Akwa Ibom State,” Onung added.
