Relationships and Trust With Vivian Nze [1]

What those working in the hospitality, aviation, travel and tourism industry have to say.

Being able to relate with others and having those you can count on is one of the most beautiful things one should be excited about having in life.

From time to time, you and I desire to have one or two persons around us, especially to share with us in our special moments.

No man is an island. A tree can never make a forest.

Relationship from my understanding refers to the way two or more people relate with one another.

The dictionary says “it’s the way two or more people feel and behave towards each other.

A close romantic friendship between two people, often a sexual one”

Trust on another hand implies being accountable to one other. It means that you are reliable and can be depended upon.

Trust depicts what one believes and to what extent he or she will go to uphold it.

Trust according to the dictionary “is the firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability or strength of someone or something.”

As relationships – be it marriage or dating go through their good times, ups and down season. Likewise, workers who serve in notable industries like hospitality, aviation, travels and tourism.

These major industries no matter how interesting and enjoyable they seem, come with their baggage especially to those who work there.

And the firm understanding, trust and confidence both parties have for one another are what will sustain their relationship.

This piece will try to analyse what married, single and those dating/engaged to be married encounter regarding their level of trust for one another while working and relating with their partners and at the same time their colleagues at the workplace.

It will also showcase the tremendous successes recorded in their lives and that of relationships.

I thought it would be more interesting to bring you the voices/views of those who work in these industries.

Madam Catherine who manages one of the hotels in Abuja have this to say:

“As a couple living in one location helps a lot. That way both partners are fully aware of each other’s schedules.

Sometimes I have to work late where I’ll close around 11 pm and at another time I’ll have to pass the night in my office while working.

It’s usually not so easy for the other party but thankfully, I have a husband that understands me and knows what I can or cannot do.

There are times those called ‘Duties Managers’ will have to work for 24 hours. On such occasions, a room will be provided to them by the hotel.

In some hotels like ours, to minimise certain sexual related issues, we allow the male to handle male emergencies and vice versa. But those who are notably filled with high morals are allowed to handle issues arising from both genders.

Mrs. Rita works with the travels and tourism industry and has this to say:

“My work is usually not outside the regular timing, which is 8-5 pm daily.

On the issue of relationship and trust, my husband understands when I have to work extra hours and comes to pick me some times. And also assists in taking care of our children once he’s home before me.

While at home he brings my phone closer to me whenever it rings and has never bothered to ask who calls me from time to time.

Even when he had to travel abroad for about a year for studies, we had our scheduled timing for calls and chatting as well, and there was no reason for him to doubt me.

I think I am one of those who are so lucky to have married their best friends”.

Anthony works in a hotel and he says:

“Unfortunately, when it comes to relationship and trust, it hasn’t worked in my favour, especially because of the nature of my job.

I work Monday to Sunday, and hardly have the time for my fiancée, who keeps complaining about my inability to devote adequate time whenever we’re together.

And she also suspects virtually everything I do, thinking I’m cheating on her with some of our clients who call me from time to time.

I’ve thought of quitting my work on several occasions just to make her happy, but looking at the economy quitting is never the answer and will not make her stop doubting my actions.

Anyway, we’re a work in progress. I believe we’ll get to understand ourselves better in the coming days and will eventually have the best relationship ever”.

Ms Amaka is in the aviation sector and serves as a Flight Attendant. See what she has to say:

“My own is that I’m very grateful to God for bringing me into this organisation, which has opened doors of different kinds of relationship – business, career development and above all, I met my husband through this job.

Talking about trust, we’ve never had major issues except for some clients who may want to call to clarify certain issues regarding their travel arrangements, and he wonders why they call at odd hours. Whenever I explain, that is usually the end of the matter. He’s such an understanding man.”

Ms. Chinenye

Works in the aviation industry and she says:

“As an Indirect Frontline staff, I’ll say my industry is multifaceted. It makes one have direct contact with the high and mighty in the society, which leads to other relationship you never imagined.

It has helped me to develop interpersonal skills because you’ll meet different calibre of people, with different temperaments and backgrounds.

You’ll have to accommodate others regardless of your mood, except you want to be labelled as one with bad customer relations skills.

Working in my industry builds one’s character and attitudes. It teaches you how to be kind to everyone you meet, their status and positions notwithstanding. This is because you’ll get to see people wearing slippers without knowing they’re Presidents of other countries.

On the aspect of trust, I have lots of clients who send me money to book their tickets regularly, while others relate with me based on referrals, even without meeting me in person.

Madam Enoh works in the tourism industry and says:

“One of the toughest and riskiest industries to be is mine. Why do I say so? Because it brings different categories of people to you who will entrust their life and properties in your care, as their tourist guide.

When you take them to countries or cities they haven’t been to, you have to put security in top gear to see they are well taken care of”.

As you can see from the above experiences, relationships and trust go hand in hand, one cannot do without the other.

It’s a lot easier to trust the person you relate with and not total strangers.

And as for working in these industries, I would say the benefits outweighs the negative impacts it may have [had] on those who serve there.

What do you think? I’d love to read about your unique experiences regarding the industry you’re working with and how it impacts (has impacted) your relationship.
